- Can you use over the top of tiles with underfloor heating underneath
- Yes, glue-down LVT can generally be installed over existing tiles with underfloor heating, provided the following conditions are met: The tiles must be: Fully bonded — any hollow, cracked, or loose tiles must be re-bonded or removed and filled before installation Clean, dry, and free from any wax, polish, or contamination Within the required flatness tolerance of 3mm over 1.8 metres — if grout lines are deep or wide, they will need to be filled with a floor smoothing compound to prevent them telegraphing through the LVT over time Underfloor heating requirements: The system must be switched off or reduced to 18°C for at least 48 hours before installation After laying, leave the floor to cure for at least 24–48 hours before gradually turning the heating back up — increase by no more than 5°C per day The maximum floor surface temperature must not exceed 27°C — this is a hard limit for LVT and exceeding it can cause the adhesive to fail or the floor to expand and bubble This applies to both electric and water-fed (hydronic) underfloor heating systems Adhesive: A pressure-sensitive or hard-set adhesive rated for use with underfloor heating must be used — not all adhesives are suitable for use with heat, so this is important to confirm
